Dutching Calculator — Split a Stake Across Multiple Runners
Split one stake across several runners so whichever wins returns the same.
Dutching spreads a single total stake across two or more selections in proportion to their odds, so the return is the same no matter which of them wins. It’s used when you fancy a short list of runners and want the same return whichever of them wins.
Enter each runner’s decimal odds and either your total stake or the return you’re targeting, and the calculator hands back the exact stake for each, the combined book percentage, and the profit if any of them gets up.
How it works
Each runner’s share of the stake is proportional to its implied probability (1 ÷ odds). Add those implied probabilities together to get the “book” — under 100% means a locked-in profit across the group (an arbitrage); over 100% means the group is too short to dutch at a profit.
Dutching doesn’t change your strike rate — you still need one of your picks to win — it just equalises the return so you don’t have to weight your stakes by hand.
runner stake = total stake × (1 ÷ runner odds) ÷ Σ(1 ÷ odds)
Worked example
- Book percentage: 33.3% + 22.2% + 16.7% = 72.2%
- Stakes: ~$46.15, ~$30.77, ~$23.08
- Return if any wins: ~$138.46
- Profit: ~$38.46 (whichever of the three wins)
FAQ
- What is dutching?
- Backing two or more selections with stakes split so that you win the same amount whichever one wins.
- When is dutching worth it?
- When the combined book percentage of your selections is below 100% — then a winning runner returns a profit across the group.
- How many runners can I dutch?
- This calculator handles 2 to 8 runners. Beyond that the book percentage usually climbs above 100%.
- Does dutching guarantee a profit?
- No. It guarantees an equal return if one of your picks wins — but they can all lose. It manages stake sizing, not outcomes.
